  • Job Description

    This position is for a Full Time Certified Opthalmic Assistant in our Eye Center.  This candidate will be responsible for daily patient care and flow of clinic activities. A certification and one year of Ophthalmic Assistant experience is required, along with travel between our Tampa and Land O' Lakes offices. 



    • Promptly and professionally assist the doctor in patient care
    • Maintains a pleasant and positive attitude towards patients and co-workers. Also energetic and empathetic to patients.
    • Completes the start of day processes
    • Efficiently and accurately interviews patients and documents history
    • Performs visual acuity, lensometry, refractions, tonometry, muscle testing, confrontation visual fields, and pupil exams.
    • Performs diagnostic studies and treatments as ordered by the providers
    • Prepares specimens and requisitions for lab courier
    • Processes and assists provider with requests
    • Obtains prescription overrides and prior authorization when needed
    • Handles patient and clinical messages
    • Distributes, reviews, and teaches patient education
    • Prepares charts
    • Completes the end of day processes
    • Maintains medical equipment: ensures all equipment is calibrated, cleaned, sterilized, charged, and covered.


    • High school graduate or GED equivalent
    • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant
    • Strong customer service orientation
    • Strong team player
    • Basic computer proficiency
    • One year of experience as a Ophthalmic Assistant

    Additional Responsibilities:

    • Maintains an organized and clean work area
    • Participates in maintenance of clinical supplies
    • Demonstrates flexibility in job assignments
    • Maintain open communication with Supervisor, Doctors, and co-workers
    • Cross-train as needed
    • Shows pride and ownership in success and image of FMC
    • Conforms to all FMC policies and procedures including punctuality
    • Maintains Certification

    • Physical requirements
      • Able to stand or walk for long periods
      • Use of proper body mechanics
    • Normal concentration and normal complexity of decision making
    • High level verbal and written communication skills
    • Above average ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
    • Able to write neatly, legibly, and with correct spelling


    Occupational Exposure:

    • High risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens and chemical hazards
