Job Description

Medical Assistant Floater

Department:         Family Practice Riverview/Brandon

Job Summary:     Responsible for direct patient care and the assisting of the Physician or mid-level practitioner.  Interview patients and take medical history, give injections, complete lab and x-ray requests, keep charts current, and screen calls within physician guidelines.  Administer prescribed medications and treatment as directed by physician or mid-level practitioner.

Reports to:           Clinical Team Lead/Supervisor or Office Manager

Essential Functions of the Position:

 

  • Performs selected nursing and administrative duties.
    • Ensures patients flow through clinic in a smooth and efficient manner, by bringing the Patient back and ready to see the Provider prior to the scheduled appointment time. Coordinates the flow at the back office, making sure that patients are taken back accordingly, either by appointment, working, or walk-in basis. Will handle any complaints in reference to wait time or resolve any further inconveniences for patients with appointments or a walk-in emergency.
    • {Regular wait time for an Established Appt. = 15 min/New Pt. Appt. = 20 min/Nurse Visits =>15 min.}
    • Prepares patients for examination and treatment.
    • Takes patient histories and vital signs.
    • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
    • Applies splints and dressings.
    • Follows Nursing Standard guidelines to administer injections and vaccines.
    • Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
    • Performing various functions of a lab tech including Hematology Analyzer, Alere Afinion AS100, Clinitek Status+ Analyzer and CoaguCheck XS.
    • Being familiar with abnormal test values and being able to identify and flag such test results immediately for Physicians/Providers.
    • Notifying Physicians/Providers of all positive findings. Scheduling patient for follow up exam or special views per Provider instructions.
    • Assists the ordering Provider in performing in-house testing and ancillary procedures and ensuring all performed services and/or procedures are documented or results are scanned into Patient Account.
    • Assists physicians in preparing for minor surgeries, physicals.
    • Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments.
    • Screens telephone calls for referral to physician.
    • Ensures all Urgent Tasks, Secure Messages and employee intranet email are addressed prior to end of day. All other Non-Urgent Tasks, Secure Message and employee intranet email correspondence is addressed in timely manner of 2-3 business days.
  • Provides general information on departmental policies and procedures.
    • Notifies the Clinical Supervisor or Office Manager when clinical and office supplies need replenishing.
    • Assist in maintaining patient files, records, and other information to contribute to accurate data gathering. This data to include addressing Healthy Reminders and HEDIS Gap reports.
    • Compiles and condenses technical and statistical data for reports and records.
    • Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by Clinical Team Leader/Supervisor, Office Manager, Physicians or Associate Director of Physician Offices

Additional Responsibilities:

 

  • Perform the responsibilities of triage
  • Ability to perform in-house testing
  • Execute phlebotomy testing
  • Conduct Patient call-backs
  • Complete cross training for Front Office duties
  • Willing to work evening hours and rotating weekends
  • Perform referrals and/or prior authorizations

 

Physical and Mental Demands:

  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Ability to Type 40 W.P.M to work with Electronic Medical Record software.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Occasionally required to life and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.

 

 

Job Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Graduation from a recognized training facility for medical assistants is preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in a physician practice is preferred.
  • Experience working front and back office preferred
  • Experience performing EKG
  • CPR certification preferred.
